After the early 1990s, signs of a saturation of the Austrian market, SPAR recognized the opportunities of cross-border orientation of the company and made the decision to expand into neighboring countries. With the aim of establishing independent national organizations in neighboring countries, founded in 1990 ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) headquartered in Widnau / Switzerland . Since then, SPAR has been operating successfully in the markets in North-East Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia.
The success story of ASPIAG (Austria SPAR International AG) is based on an innovative, dynamic corporate culture. Since 1990, SPAR country organisations in Northeastern Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia has been built up and expanded in a goal-oriented manner. In the meantime, the number of shops in Austria's neighbouring countries has grown to more than 1,400 locations. The long and successful market presence of the independent SPAR country organizations guarantees the highest level of competence and an individual focus on the different needs of the customers. The cooperation and exchange of information between the individual SPAR countries with ASPIAG and SPAR Austria is intensive. Together they are on the way to becoming a sustainably successful Central European retail group.
