Development
- 1991: foundation of ASPIAG Service srl. by ASPIAG AG; acquisition of various companies and consolidation of market position
- 1997: opening of the TANN meat factory in Bolzano (now Superdistribuzione srl.)
- 2000: focus on the area of Northeast Italy and the province of Ferrara
- 2007: Takeover of 12 Pellicano Supermarkets
- 2008: Takeover of further 49 Pellicano Supermarkets
- 2009: Takeover of ten A&O Supermarkets
- 2012: Strong expansion in core regions and new neighbouring provinces. Acquisition of the license for the area Emilia Romagna.
- 2015: Takeover of eight Coop and two Coopca Supermarkets
- 2018: Start of building of the new central warehouse near Monselice
Number one food retailer
SPAR Austria Group began its foreign expansion in 1990, in South Tyrol. Subsequently, in 1991, ASPIAG Service s.r.l. was established in this region. The takeover of various companies led to this company expanding its market position through healthy growth, so that DESPAR north-east Italy is now the market leader in the area in question. The company already has 565 stores in the regions of Trentino South Tyrol, Venezia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Emilia Romagna, and in the provinces of Ferrara, Bologna, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena and Mantua. More than 300 DESPAR retailers form a further strong pillar of the Group. They run their DESPAR and EUROSPAR stores like typical regional local suppliers. Head office of ASPIAG Service srl. is in Mestrino (Padua). There are also regional headquarters in Bolzano and Udine that supply and oversee the adjacent regions. Expanding organically and growing sales steadily, DESPAR is in the thick of things and can measure up to other food retailers in the country, serving the market, increasing sustainability.

With the DESPAR and EUROSPAR markets, INTERSPAR Hypermarkets and DESPAR Express, all store formats are represented in Italy, so that there is an individual solution available for each location.
